PRESS RELEASE Date: 8th November 2011 Harvesting the ingredients and cooking al fresco in Brighton could be the final challenge for BBC Radio 1 DJ Sara Cox and comedian Rufus Hound who are hitting the road from 14 – 18 November, in celebration of the massive £30m raised each week by players for the Good Causes up and down the country. Spearheading The National Lottery’s new Facebook campaign, ‘Cox & Hound Hit The Road’, the duo are spending five days driving from Scotland to the South coast to explore the projects that have benefited from National Lottery funding. Where they go and what exactly they do at each location will be determined by public vote through a specially-designed app on the National Lottery Facebook page www.facebook.com/TheNationalLotteryUK. Fans of home grown food are being encouraged to get voting to ensure that the Brighton’s lottery-funded food project, Harvest Brighton and Hove, plays host to the celebrities on Friday 18 November. Enthusiastic local food lovers at Harvest Brighton and Hove are busy increasing the amount of food that is produced within the city through training and support for local residents. Should the project receive the most Facebook votes, the celebrities will be harvesting ingredients before watching community chef Olly Dawson whip up a delicious meal. The challenge doesn’t stop there, in the midst of the community garden the stars have to cook the very same dish for Olly to taste and judge! Harvest Brighton and Hove is one of ten projects nationwide shortlisted from the 365,000+ projects which have received funding since The National Lottery began in 1994. The projects reveal a snapshot of the enormous range of Good Causes to have benefitted all over the country – from charity and community to education and the environment, from sport and the arts to health and heritage - however, only five of the projects will actually receive a visit from the duo. Two projects in five areas of the UK – Scotland, the North, the Midlands, Wales and the South - will go head to head to compete for Facebook votes to secure a visit. Harvest Brighton and Hove will be up against The Folkestone Triennial , a Lottery-funded public art project. Other challenges for the daring duo include old-fashioned ploughing, woodland laser combat, Welsh choir sing-offs and Segway racing. Each day, the pair will take fans with them on their journey of discovery, through a daily video diary as well as exclusive video clips and pictures of their tour. Road tripper Sara Cox said: “I think the roadtrip is a great chance to show everyone who plays or has played The National Lottery, just what their money actually means to local communities.” Fellow passenger Rufus Hound added: ‘I’ve bought a few National Lottery Scratchcards in my time – I’ve even won a few quid over the years! For those times I didn’t get lucky, it would be good to see the impact of that cash and how other people have benefited.” The Facebook app and public voting will be live from Tuesday 8th November on www.facebook.com/TheNationalLotteryUK. Supporters of Harvest keen to see the two celebrities cooking al fresco in Brighton should get voting now; entries close Wednesday 16 November. UPDATE: Harvest won the public vote and the celebrities visited our vegetable garden in Preston Park for a cook-off.
