Growing on a New Plot (East)

Level: Beginner gardeners and others new to handling a large plot

Do you have an allotment or large garden and don’t know where to start?  This course is aimed at guiding people through their first growing season i.e. new plot holders and people growing veg for the first time.carers allotment-w200-h200

What the course covers:

The course will introduce the basics of growing fruit and veg organically especially regarding disease prevention, soil health and water conservation. It will begin with a short practical session focused on starting from scratch and dealing with grass and brambles. Then the course will cover sowing seeds in trays and directly in beds, explaining how to prepare the soil and beds for different seeds to maximise germination. You will also learn about transplanting of lettuces and potting on tomatoes. 

What you will need on the day:

This course will be taught outdoors so please dress warmly and wear waterproof shoes and jackets. All tools and materials will be provided by the trainers. There are toilet facilities on site. Tea, coffee and snacks will be provided.

About the site:

Whitehawk Community Food Project is a friendly, allotment-based organic gardening group. Volunteer days are Thursdays and Sundays 12pm-dusk and anyone who helps out on the allotment will be rewarded with fresh seasonal produce. This is a well-established site with beautiful sea views, polytunnels, orchard, and vegetable and herb gardens.
