Sowing and Growing (West)

Level: Beginners and those will little experience of gardening.


 Are you new to growing your own vegetables and fruit?  This course will cover all the basics you need to start growing your own delicious produce.wcfp lettuce planting-w200-h200

What the course covers:

Come to Mile Oak and find out how to sow vegetables, plant potatoes, care for your seedlings and make new strawberry plants.  The course will also show you how to care for your crops through soil preparation, watering, how to feed your plants, pests and composting.  

At the end of the course you will be able to take home a variety of vegetables you have sown and planted on the course to start off your own productive patch.

What you will need on the day:

This is a practical course taught outdoors so please dress warmly and wear waterproof shoes and jackets. All tools and materials will be supplied by the trainer. Tea, coffee and biscuits will also be provided. Please bring one or more containers for planting which you can easily carry.

About the trainer: Saskia Wesnigk-Wood is a teacher in adult education and has taught German and Drama at Portslade Community College. Saskia is a founding member of the North Portslade Community Allotment Group, volunteers with Cookability and has run vegetarian cooking classes in the community. She also organises the Portslade food co-op and is a keen gardener. In her spare time Saskia directs amateur dramatics. She has two children.

About the site:
The North Portslade Community Allotment meet regularly on their plot in Mile Oak. They work there as often as possible and plant, weed, harvest, have picnics and share friendship and knowledge. Most members have small children who are being taught about plants and creatures. New members are always welcome and children encouraged.
