Hello and welcome to the second edition of Harvest news. Didn’t get the first one? Apologies – we had some technical difficulties. If you’d like to read it, it can be found here.
Harvest update
Since we last wrote, the Harvest team has been out and about meeting people and spreading the word about the projects. We’ve been on the radio a few times (Radio Reverb and Brighton & Hove Community Radio) and we took part in a fantastic ‘plot to plate’ event as a part of the White Nights Festival where we made soup, chutney, hot spiced apple juice and carved pumpkins til midnight.
We’ve also been developing the Harvest training programme - first session, on composting, will take place in December. Please watch this space, or check the website for details.
We’re joining forces with the Fair Trade Market at the Friends Meeting House on Ship Street on Saturday 19 December to hold a Christmas market. There will be locally produced foods to buy, plus cookery demonstrations to give you some new ideas and inspiration for cooking with winter local veg. More info to follow in due course.
What's on
Did you know that there is a weekly farmers’ market at Churchill Square? It’s on every Wednesday from 10:00 – 4:00. Come check out the delicious seasonal fruit and veg, plus stock up on jams, honey, meat, fish, cheese, bread and more.
Funding
Environmental Sustainability Grant: plan ahead – the next deadline for this grant is early January 2010. This funding programme supports community and voluntary organisations that aim to improve the local environment, including projects that focus on organic food growing. A new application form will be available on the website in December. Visit http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1145448#SubTitle4 for more information.
Volunteering opportunities
Want to learn more about growing organic fruit & vegetables? Then head up to Fork & Dig It for one of their work days which take place on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Fork & Dig It is a community gardening project located at Stanmer Organics. Call Yvonne on 07880 870217 for more info.
Callout to growing projects
