Harvest

Update

The Grow Your Neighbour's Own scheme needs your help! Do you have a garden that you'd love to see planted up with edible plants but just don't have the time or capacity to look after it? Register your garden with Grow Your Neighbour's Own and we'll help match you up with a willing gardener. There's no cost to use the scheme, and garden owner and gardener share the harvest. We're also looking for more experienced gardeners who could share their skills with the less experienced gardeners on the scheme. The scheme can also match up allotment holders with a co-worker who will share the labour and the produce. If you'd be interested in being a co-worker, registering your garden or sharing your skills, please get in touch on 01273 431700 or email drew@bhfood.org.uk .

Preston Park Demo Garden work day this Saturday: Drop by the garden (located just behind the Rotunda Cafe) this Saturday 24 July between 10:30am and 12:30pm to help with sowing seeds for the autumn and find out more about the garden. Read our garden blog for more info.

Gardening training this summer: Whitehawk Community Food Project will be running a second 'dealing with pests and diseases organically' course on 7 August as well as a seed saving course on 21 August. Recognising pests and diseases and knowing how to manage them without using chemicals is a crucial part of organic gardening. Seed saving is a practise used by gardeners for hundreds of years. Seed saving helps save money and allows you to save and share good varieties of fruit and veg. Come on the course and learn more!

This months growing & eating tips

Main Content Inline SmallIn the kitchen... There's just so much to choose from right now it makes cooking that much easier (well unless you're indecisive and struggle with choice!) - courgettes, onions, cucumbers, beetroot, salads, beans, potatoes, artichokes, radishes, raspberries, red currants and many other kinds of delicious fruit & veg. Summer cooking is great, especially on those sunny days when you get to eat outside. If you're packing a picnic, try this recipe for spinach pie (good hot too). And what meal is complete without dessert? Why not try something different like beetroot chocolate cake? Visit our recipe database for more ideas for summer cooking.

In the garden... It's still been warm and dry out there so do keep up with the watering! Also be on the lookout for blight on potatoes and tomatoes (more info about blight ). It's the end of July so there's lots to harvest (see 'in the kitchen', above), but also lots to sow. Plant spring greens this month, as well as leafy greens like chard, kale and perpetual spinach to keep you going throughout the winter. More July gardening tips.
