Update

More summer training courses: Whitehawk Community Food Project will be running a second 'dealing with pests and diseases organically' course on 7 August. The course will help you get to grips with recognising pests and diseases and how to manage them without using chemicals. More info...

Warm weather and bolted salad: I't's been so warm and dry that the salad growing in the Preston Park demo garden has bolted! Find out how to prevent your salad from doing the same and read more about developments in the garden in our blog: www.harvest-bh.org.uk/blogs.

Interested in food swapping?: Here at Harvest we sometimes get calls from people who want to swap something they've grown, produced, or caught (as in fish). Is anyone out there interested in swapping food with other people, or are you already doing it? Please get in touch and let us know. If you want to do some swapping we can help connect you with others.

Free plant pots: A number of free plastic and terra cotta plant pots ranging in size from 2" to 7" are available for collection. Need some? Please contact Maria on 01273 415725.

This months growing & eating tips

Main Content Inline SmallIn the kitchen... July is an exciting time of year for cooking as more and more produce becomes available from local farms and gardens. Delicious early potatoes, broadbeans, beetroot, garlic, salad greens, and the first of the courgettes are just a few of the veg on offer at the moment. There's lots of lovely fruit around too - why not whip up some delicious but simple strawberry tarts or a refreshing summer fruit yoghurt ice ? Check out our recipe database for more ideas for summer cooking or why not learn how to save money and waste less with top tips and recipes at: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/lovefoodhatewaste.

In the garden... It still hasn't rained so keep on watering your gardens and allotments! It's hard to think about winter in the midst of a lovely warm summer, but now is the time to start planning your winter garden. Sow chard, perpetual spinach and kale for fresh leaves through winter. There's also still time to sow carrots and fennel and why not try growing something more unusual like chicory, mooli radish or kohl rabi? Lots to be harvesting now. In addition to things listed above, also harvest artichokes, currants, gooseberries, peas, beans and onions. More July gardening tips.

And beyond the garden... Keep your eyes open for the many cherry trees around the city. The fruit is on the verge of ripeness so get it before the birds do!!
