Harvest update: A new course has been added to the Harvest training programme – if you’ve recently taken on a new allotment or have been lucky enough to move into a house with a large garden, then this course is for you! ‘Growing on a new plot’ will be delivered by Jacob and Ben at the Whitehawk Community Food Project on 10th and 24th of April. Check out details of this and other training courses.
Next courses coming up are ‘Planning the Productive Plot’ and ‘How to Grow Fruit’, both on Saturday 13th February. There are still places available, so book now!
What’s on: As ever, there’s tons of good food-related action coming up including:
- Seedy Saturday, 6 February, 10:30 – 3:30, Southover Grange, Southover High Street, Lewes. There will be seed swapping, as well as talks – including a talk by Marguerite Patten, food stalls, gardening advice and a chutney competition!
- Seedy Sunday, 7 February, 10:00 – 4:30, Hove Town Hall: The country’s biggest community seed swap! Come stock up on seeds for the new growing season, plus there talks, demonstrations, second hand books, and sorts of other fun things.
- Soup and Stomp, 17 February, 11:30 – 2:30, Portslade Village Centre, Windlesham Close. Recipe: make a soup together + go out for a short walk + return to eat the soup = a healthy day out for all ages! For more information call Lucinda on 07795 336150.
- Seedbomb workshops, 16, 19, 22 February, 13, 17, 24 March – various times and locations. A fun activity for half-term! More information on the workshops and how to book.
- Cook the Seasons, Thursday 25 February, 4, 11, 18 March. A four-week cookery course all about cooking with local, seasonal ingredients. Booking is essential.
- Charles Dowding workshop, 6 March, 11:00 – 4:00: This workshop on no-dig gardening promises to be an inspiring and interesting event. Bookings being taken now!
- Build a wood fired clay oven, 10 – 11 April, 11:00 – 4:00, Moulsecoomb Forest Garden: Come prepared to get stuck in and dirty and learn how to build a clay oven from start to finish! Bookings taken online or ring 01273 431700.

Garden Gadabouts is looking for people to open their gardens to local residents on either the last weekend of June or first weekend of July. Last year, some of the gardens included food growing and were really inspiring. If you’ve got a great garden, show it off! Garden Gadabouts raises money for Sussex Beacon. Support for projects: Fresh Ideas Network is offering free social enterprise mentoring support for community food projects based in the south east of England who wish to develop sustainable solutions through income generating activities. In this five month programme, projects will receive support todevelop their capacity to run businesses and services that benefit local people. Application deadline is 22 February – please contact Chiara@freshideas.org.uk to request an application form or more information.
